Understanding Applications for Foundation Programmes in UK: Why Are There Quota Limitations for Health Science Subjects?

For many students applying for foundation courses in UK universities, especially those interested in pursuing health science disciplines, the period following the Lunar New Year is crucial. Why? Firstly, after the Lunar New Year, students start receiving their Grade 11 mid-term report cards, giving them a clearer idea of the grades they might achieve in the DSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination). Secondly, some UK university foundation programs have limited spaces available. 

In the UK, not all university health science departments accept international students. This is because students enrolled in these courses must complete a sufficient number of practical hours in order to graduate and obtain their professional licenses. However, due to the limited number of placement opportunities available, competition for these spots is fierce, even among local students. Considering these factors, some institutions choose to only admit local students. For those that do accept international applicants, there are strict quotas in place. These universities must consider students applying through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) as well as reserve spots for students graduating from affiliated college preparatory programmes. 

Generally, foundation programmes accept HKDSE or Grade 11 results. Most health science foundation programmes require students to have studied at least one science subject in the HKDSE. Only a few institutions do not have this requirement. While this system has its advantages and disadvantages, one benefit is that it offers students who are currently studying arts or commerce the chance to switch to a health science discipline. However, students without a science background will need to take biology, chemistry, or physics during their foundation year. Therefore, students interested in health science who are currently studying arts or commerce need to be prepared for this new challenge.
